Hey Julian:

There's at least one big fan of the Tragically Hip on this list: me. I =
have all their CDs and several boots (on cassette), and have seen them =
live (in L.A.) three times (Road Apples tour at the Roxy 5/3/91, FC tour =
at the Roxy 4/93, and DFN tour at the House of Blues 5/18/95). I'm not =
a big fan of Day for Night, largely because it sounds lousy, especially =
compared to the dynamic sound on Road Apples and Fully Completely. I =
blame the Hip's live sound man/studio engineer-turned-producer, Mark =
Vreeken. He has no idea what a drum set should sound like, live or in =
the studio, and that always really annoys me. I don't like a grungy =
sound. Thank God Steve Berlin (of Los Lobos) came along to produce =
Phantom Power (a major step back in the right direction after DFN and =
the inconsistent Trouble in the Henhouse). Music at Work (2000) was =
also a very strong album. I'm waiting for their next CD, which I =
understand is coming soon. I've never understood why they aren't huge =
in the U.S. Loosely speaking, they are like an unpretentious and much =
better Pearl Jam. =20

And they are a brilliant live act; Gordon Downie is as distinctive a =
frontman as is Peter Garrett -- in a word, riveting. =20

Check them out, Powderworkers! Start with the live CD, "Live Between =
Us" or 1998's "Phantom Power." 1991's "Fully Completely" is probably =
the closest in approach to Oil. Remember, Oil toured across Canada as =
the special guests of the Hip's "Another Roadside Attraction" tour in =
the summer of 1993. I'd love to see these guys tour together again, as =
co-headliners (90 minutes each) at mid-sized venues.  They'll both be on =
the road in North America this year.

Bill Wolfe

The thought manifests as the word;
the word manifests as the deed;
the deed develops into the habit;
and habit hardens into character.
So watch the thought and its ways with care,=20
and let it spring from love
born out of concern for all things.
